Advait Ramanan and Swapnil Agrawal, a team of Georgia Debate Union debaters, are gearing up for what promises to be one of their most challenging debates to date. On January 20-21, Ramanan and Agrawal will face off against six other teams in the Dartmouth Round Robin, one of the most presitigious intercollegiate policy debate tournaments of the year. Participation in the debates is by invitation only, and the teams that compete are typically the top 7 ranked intercollegiate policy debate teams in the country.

Ramanan and Agrawal’s invitation to Dartmouth is a testament to their hard work. Their participation in the debates next weekend will mark the Georgia Debate Union’s first appearance in the Dartmouth Round Robin in over a decade, demonstrating both Ramanan and Agrawal’s exceptional talent and the nurture they’ve received at the hands of the Georgia Debate Union’s first-rate coaching staff, led by head debate coach Hays Watson, who is quoted in the Franklin College story below.

The following story on Ramanan and Agrawal was prepared by The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, which will help to fund Ramanan and Agrawal’s trip to Dartmouth (Click here to view the original):

Two members of the Georgia Debate Union were invited to the prestigious Dartmouth Round Robin debates at Dartmouth College in January 2018.

Advait Ramanan, junior from Fulton, Maryland, and Swapnil Agrawal, a junior Foundation Fellow from Chamblee, have been invited to the prestigious Dartmouth Round Robin debates at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.  The debates will take place the weekend of January 20-21, 2018.

The Dartmouth Round Robin typically features the top 7 ranked intercollegiate policy debate teams in the country.  This year the other invitees include teams representing Harvard University, Northwestern University, Emory University, the University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, and the University of Nevada - Las Vegas.

This is the first time a team representing the Georgia Debate Union has been invited to the Dartmouth Round Robin since 2007 - the year the Georgia Debate Union earned the Rex Copeland Award, the award given to the best individual team over the course of each college debate season.

"Being among the top seven teams in the nation is a major accomplishment for our students, the team and UGA," said head debate coach Hays Watson. "It's a testament to their successful year thus far, with two top 5 finishes at the two largest debate tournaments in the fall semester."

The Georgia Debate Union's trip to Dartmouth will be funded with support from the University of Georgia's Division of Student Affairs, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of the President.
