Graduate Student Research Seed Grants

Overview

The purpose of this initiative is to facilitate graduate student research projects. It is intended to provide early-stage funding to support graduate student research projects. These grants are designed to help students launch or advance independent research and serve as a complement to other university and external funding opportunities.

Purpose

  • Support graduate student-led research projects (thesis/dissertation-related or additional projects).
  • Ensure the student is first author on any completed projects.
  • Exclude use of funds for faculty-centered projects or conference travel.
  • Require applicants to demonstrate that they have also applied

Eligibility

  • MA Students in their second year
  • PhD students in their third year or later
    • Students may apply more than once; however, first-time applicants will be given priority.

Funding

  • Total Budgeted Funds: $5,000 (FY 2024 - 2025)
  • Award Amounts: Typically $500 - $1,200

Spending Deadline

  • Individual spending deadline: June 1
  • Funds not spent before the end of the fiscal year cannot be guaranteed.
  • All funds must be spent before the first research grant deadline of the next academic year (typically October 1).

Proposal Guidelines

Proposals must be no more than two pages and should include:

  • Project description
  • Detailed budget
  • Project timeline

The following items should also be submitted but are not included in the two-page limit:

  • Copies of applications for other funding (Graduate School, Willson Center, or other)
  • Endorsement and signed statement of advisor assumption of financial responsibility

Review Process

  • Decisions are made by the Graduate Admissions Committee
    • If a committee member's advisee applies, the Director of Graduate Studies will appoint a replacement from the same area.

Reporting Requirement

A final project report must be submitted by June 15.
