Jennifer Monahan came to UGA as an assistant professor in 1993 after completion of her Ph.D. at the University of Southern California. She teaches classes in theory development, research methods, message design, emotion, and intercultural communication. Her research interests are in health and interpersonal communication.  She studies social interactions and conversational behavior in a host of contexts including initial interaction and arguments. Her work also examines how message production and message reception are affected by alcohol consumption. Her current grant with NIAAA examines how women communicate in risky sexual situations when under the influence of alcohol.

Jennifer Monahan and colleagues recently presented research at the International Communication Association's annual meeting in Puerto Rico on associations between communication behavior and abuse in romantic relationships.
