Graduate Certificates

The Graduate Certificate in Science and Health Communication trains students in science and health-related disciplines to communicate effectively with various audiences for the purposes of:

  1. creating and maintaining disciplinary and interdisciplinary alliances within the sciences, including public health and epidemiology;
  2. successfully communicating with the public and its various stakeholders; and
  3. training for a diverse number of jobs, including public policy advocacy, public health consulting, and lab management. 

This graduate certificate is open to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students. Degree-seeking students should complete the application form and submit it to the Graduate Coordinator Assistant at csgcoord@uga.edu. Non-degree-seeking students can submit an application to the UGA Graduate School, including a Statement of Purpose and Curriculum Vitae. Questions about the certificate or the application process can be directed to the Graduate Coordinator Assistant at csgcoord@uga.edu.

The skills emphasized in this certificate program include:

  • communicating about science and health in a clear, compelling, and persuasive way;
  • effectively employing visual aids to both specialized and lay audiences;
  • identifying, evaluating, and responding to different types of audiences;
  • successfully evaluating and navigating controversies around scientific research products, especially around issues of risk.

Certificate Requirements

Furthermore, the University of Georgia at large offers many other graduate certificates. Communication Studies students often complete certificates in the Women's Studies or African-American Studies departments, but others may be completed under consultation with your advisor and the department in question.
